WHANGANUI RIVER RD

There’s an informal campsite with toilets and cold water at Pipiriki, and another one (even less formal) just north of Atene.

Book the following places in advance – no one’s going to turn you away, but they appreciate a bit of warning! From south to north, accommodation includes the following:

Rivertime Lodge LODGE $$

Offline map ( 06-342 5595; www.rivertimelodge.co.nz; 1569 Whanganui River Rd; d $130, extra adult/child $45/35) A rural idyll: grassy hills folding down towards the river and the intermittent bleating of sheep. Rivertime is a moss green farmhouse with three bedrooms, a barbecue, a lovely deck overlooking the river and no TV! Sleeps six.

Flying Fox LODGE, HOSTEL $$

Offline map ( 06-342 8160; www.theflyingfox.co.nz; Whanganui River Rd; sites $20, d $100-200) This eco-attuned getaway is on the riverbank across from Koriniti. You can self-cater in the Brewhouse, James K or Glory Cart (self-contained cottages), opt for B&B ($120 per person), or pitch a tent in a bush clearing. Access is by jetboat; otherwise you can park across the river from the accommodation then soar over the river on the flying fox.

Kohu Cottage RENTAL HOUSE $

Offline map ( 06-342 8178; [email protected]; Whanga-nui River Rd; d $70) A snug little cream-coloured weatherboard cottage (100 years old!) above the road in Koriniti, sleeping three bods. There’s a basic kitchen and a wood fire for chilly riverside nights.

Koriniti Marae LODGE $

Offline map ( 06-342 8198; www.koriniti.com; Koriniti Pa Rd; dm $30) This marae on the east bank offers dorm-style beds for pre-booked groups; offer koha (a donation) plus the fee. It also runs a 24-hour ‘cultural experience’ for groups, including a haka (war dance), weaving, storytelling and three meals ($190 per person).

Operiki Farmstay FARMSTAY $

Offline map ( 06-342 8159; [email protected]; Whanganui River Rd; incl breakfast & dinner s/d $55/110) On a steep hillside 1.5km north of Koriniti, this is a cheery in-with-the-family farmhouse. There are scenic walks around the property, and macadamia-nut muffins come hot from the oven. The friendliest place this side of Disneyland.

St Joseph’s Church HOSTEL $

Offline map ( 06-342 8190; www.compassion.org.nz; Whanga-nui River Rd; dm adult/child $25/15, linen $10) Taking in bedraggled travellers and offering 20 dorm-style beds and a simple kitchen, the sisters at St Joe’s await to issue your deliverance – book ahead for the privilege. Moutoa Island, site of a historic 1864 battle, is just downriver.
